(OT) Creating PVR textures

Slightly OT since it's not fractal related but do any of you programmers have code (or links to code) to convert images into PVRTC textures ?
I want to save images to be used in the future as textures from our iPhone/iPad software and there may be a lot of them so ideally they should be converted to compressed textures before being saved, all I can find in the Xcode/iPad SDK development help is the Mac tool to pre-convert textures, nothing about how to do it yourself at runtime.
