Just wanted to say hello to all, and much thanks to this forum as I began writing my own Mandelbrot script in MatLab because I was bored.  This forum helped me out a lot when Wikipedia could only take me so far.  I just figured I would post a few pics of what my m-file can do so far.  Here's one where I thought the color looked pretty cool

I played around with some normalization and ended up with this

    http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/6536/rendk.png

After a while I decided to play around inside the m set so I used the normalized iteration counts inside the m set to render this one

This last pic begs for palette scrolling, aka oldskool plasma.

Im not exactly sure what you mean here because Im pretty new to all this...only started playin with this because I had to play with matlab in my dynamic controls class.  Im gonna do some searching on this but if you could hook me up with some info on it  id appreciate it.

Colour cycling is done within the fractal program du jour and, as far as I know, only with indexed images. That means that each pixel in the image does not represent an RGB colour, but is the number of a colour within a colour map/palette. Colour cycling cycles the colours in the colour map/palette while quickly redrawing the pixels of the image but NOT recalculating the fractal...

Easier to show:

Notice how only the appearance of zooming is given, but the fractal image itself never changes.

Your last image is the most interesting, and yes, it might look cool as an animation with cycling colors.

It will take me a little while to color cycle because my script assigns each pixel an RGB value, but I did use some trig functions in the pixel mapping so I could just put it another variable that will drive the trig functions and write an image for each iteration...but while I work on that I have been playing around inside (stopping the outside coloring at relatively low iteration and allowing the inside to iterate for really long times) and I have come up with some interesting pics... heres one of my favs

I will be zooming inside these to see what shows up as well

not at all, you could basically load it in photoshop and make an animation using those "do not remember correct name for" non-destructive effect layers to gradually shift hue.
