Its not just fractal faces. Look at the faces in the bark of a tree or the scratches on your wall.
Humans are hardwired for human like faces. Any slight variation away from the healthy norm is seen as grotesque. Since any pattern that is somewhat facelike is highly unlikely to be exceptionally facelike most of them will appear to us as bizarre and unfriendly.
Leonardo was said to have said that any good apprentice should be able to get inspiration from the faces in the toilet walls and floor.
BTW if you turn many of these images upside down they look a lot happier as the main cue you are taking is probably the curve of the mouth.

Really interesting discussion. For something that most people would consider abstract, the first thing people do when they see fractals is to look for something familiar. Christopher Hitchens is right when he refers to us pattern-seeking animals!

I have not really noticed many faces as such, although many circular or oval shapes are seen as eyes. However, here's one of my own FractInt formulas which creates this lovely gremlin type of character: Doesn't seem an unfriendly face to me. Simon

To anyone viewing my posts and finding missing/broken links to a website called www.needanother.co.uk, I still own the domain but recently cancelled my server (saving £30/month) so even though the domain address exists, it points nowhere. I hope to one day sort something out but for now - sorry!
