I like seeing the images you create with a white background over the black background.  For me, it makes it easier to see some of the details better.

I'm tending to like the white backgrounds more myself.

So far the white background seems to give the flames a more solid smokey feel, where a black background gives them more of a glowing plasma feel. I've done a couple with different background colors as well.

Obviously I'm just begining to learn what works when, I think a lot depends on the palette and the shape and feel of the flame itself, one flame may work really nicely with a colorful palette on a black background, where the next flame will only look good with a more subdued palette against a light background.

Of course in a couple of months I may totally disagree with what I just said

Yes, I agree.  A good explanation of how the dark and light backgrounds affect a flame image.

....I think a lot depends on the palette and the shape and feel of the flame itself, one flame may work really nicely with a colorful palette on a black background, where the next flame will only look good with a more subdued palette against a light background.

I think the palette will most likely effect the choice of background over the shape/feel of the flame.  But for my own preferences, I tend to enjoy viewing them on a white background.
