I am a sotware developer with some mathematical background. In 1990 i started to write a program to render a 3d equivalent to the mandelbrot set. But at this time there was no good looking 3D version of the mandelbrot fractal known.

And now, 20 jears later, i updated my old software to render the Mandelbulb set and explore this strange object.

Actually, I think this image you are showing us is very similar to something that was used back in 1979 in a major motion picture (you can see all the little Mandelbulbs scattered about:
