Still got a laundry list of things to do to the tracer, but this one's pretty good...

It's nice but somewhat unsharp... Is that due to  jpeg-compression?

yes JPG compression and craptastic anti-aliasing.  plus it's not as "sharp" as most of the other renders as the tracer is not using a distance estimator so you're seeing a very detailed surface as it's the actual surface of the basin.
