The basic idea is implemented in JWildfire for a while, but 2.1 will raise it to a new level, the ability to create advanced DoF/bokeh-like effects in an easy way.

Standard implementations (as for example JWildfire 1.0 or Apo3Dhack) use some regular blur to create DoF effects. Usually, something like a focus area (sharp area) is defined and a portion of the image is the more blurred the larger the distance from this area is.
Example:


The basic idea for creating advanced effects is to use any other fractal shapes instead of the standard blur.
For example a more typically "bokeh"-like shape:
