Hello everybody! My name is Nick and I live in Australia. I'm 16 years old and have recently become interested in fractals. I do an extention maths course in my highschool and plan to do something maths/science/engineering related after school. I've messed around with mendelbulb a bit and would love to know more about the use of fractals. What are the practical applications of them apart from spectacular imagery? How should i go about learning more about them? I know how the mandelbrot and julia set are generated but i haven't got a clue about 3D fractals.

Love some info.
Cheers,
Nick

I think the practical applications are that fractals are often optimal in some respect:

fractal antennas maximise area covered per total wire length
fractal lattice structures (eiffel tower, bird bones) maximise strength to weight ratio
fractal radiators maximise heat dissipation for area of metal

natural examples:

fractal shorelines maximise resistance to wave erosion by deflecting the wave energy
dendritic rivers (fractal tree shape) minimise energy to get to mouth by minimising length from all points in the catchment basin.

Greetings, and a belated welcome to this particular forum !!!    cheesy

Just noticed that you only made this one initial posting since joining the group.   Were you able to find everything that you wanted to know about??   Hope you did not get overwhelmed with all of the data that can be found concerning fractals, and how they are used in mat/nature/engineering/etc...
