Using Mathematica 8 with heavy-duty computations compiled into C, I generated a 262144*262144 monochromatic image of the Mandelbrot set (7 hours, 25MB), and a 65536*32768 full-colour image of the upper-half-plane (1 hour, 40MB). Both can be downloaded and viewed in the cellular automata program Golly. The files are available, together with a few screenshots and extensive description, at the following web page:

Lol. Does that mean you could start a cellular automaton calculation on that initial condition?

Yes, if you read the article you'll find that I simulated the 262144 * 262144 Mandelbrot set in Conway's Game of Life. The results were fairly uninteresting, although the long lines between minibrots on the left-hand 'stalk' of the Mandelbrot set evolve into Sierpinski triangles.

I'd suggest:
- trying different automata
- trying only the edge of the Mset, instead of filling it all.
