I've seen at least one case of somebody's portrait incorporated into a fractal. Is there software available that I could use to take a picture, trim out a shape, and plug that shape into a fractal?

Like this?

That links to an animation   afro

There are many fractal programs that do this.  The one shown was made in Mutatorkammer, probably the easiest one to get fun results from (check the downloads link at the top of the page)  (it's free).

Others to try include ChaosPro (free), Ultra Fractal (pay), and a few others whose names escape me at the moment ...

With creative use of light maps Mandelbulb3D can work too.

Have fun experimenting!

JWildfire can also do that, you can use images both as color or bump map - but I had not the time to create some cool examples yet - thanks for the reminder cheesy

Since you didn't give an example, here's a Mandelbulb3D test with my Fiancee again

And a ChaosPro example:

Thank you all for your help on this. I had Chaos Pro once before but hadn't played with it much, but now I will. I grabbed MutatorKammer but it doesn't seem to want to install on Win 7 for some reason, but I'll try again later. The system is busy with a Mandelbulb3d animation, and I don't want to press my luck. I'm looking forward to figuring out how to do this in ChaosPro.

Unless your program is available someplace...

Chaos Pro has an "outside coloring mode" for importing images.

MutatorKammer installed on my Win7 rig, but it is a bit unstable.  It does work as a "portable" though, so if Christian will give his permission  (our Administrator and creator of MutatorKammer) I can get you a copy extracted from it's installer and packaged in a zip file.

There is also Pixelbender  (by subblue, I think) which works for this either as a stand alone program or as a photoshop plug in.

Still can't recall the others...  I'll have a look around when I get some time.

I remembered another!

Janus Fractal can do this:

And it's free!

Get it here : http://www.fractalforums.com/general-discussion/janus-fractal-v1-111-freeware-fractal-application/

EDIT : Poopy.  Just looked at the link.  The host site is gone   cry

eNZedBlue hasn't been here in close to 4 years.  So that one may be lost  forever ...

The Julius Fractal link goes to a Megauploads URL which gets an FBI warning, so that's not good. I'm sure it doesn't reflect on the quality or safety of the software, and only an indictment of the place he chose to make it available./ Still, it is out of reach for me. MutatoKammer doesn't seem to work, so I am left with ChaosPro (CP) CP has a bit of a learning curve, but it also allows me to rotate the mandelbrot set and change it into a 3d plane, so both features are met. The learning curve is steep so far, so it will take me a while to embrace these new capabilities. We shall see how it goes. Thanks again for your help. I will check here later to see if anything new comes up.

Hello,
my application called yFract is also capable of combining images with fractals. The chosen image in "injected" into the current fractal formula in a given way. See this FF link for more details and sample images.

Here is an example of an image applied (as variation) to a fractal flame in JWildfire:

The regarding functionality is still under construction but works at least in a way that playing around with it is much fun.

Best regards
