It's in between   cheesy
The cup on the wooden table is just an photograph. It is mapped onto a square shape of a fractal flame (which causes the replication of it). Additionally each copy is slightly deformed in all directions where additional bumpmapping (using the photograph again) applies in the "z"-direction. This causes the cups to look more real.
I think after I released the software version (this is just a beta) I will do a tutorial for this kind of effect.
