Really does look like the Mandelbulb, doesn't it? I'd like to see some kind of technical specifics on this "subdivision algorithm" he used - anyone got any ideas? And any suggestions on why it might mirror the Mandelbulb so well? Or is it just that all fractals have a certain degree of similarity?

Michael Hansmeyer has made some amazing projects, try his site at http://www.michael-hansmeyer.com

Some technical info from his Flickr site (http://www.flickr.com/photos/junearch/sets/72157602857326020/):
"Subdivision of platonic solids using a derivative of the Catmull Clark, Doo Sabin, Loop and Midedge algorithms. Generated in Processing"

Also notice that TopMod3D makes it possible to play around with such subdivisions: http://code.google.com/p/topmod/

Their normal site is unfortunately down (and has been for a quite some time), but try searching Google Images for 'topmod3d' for examples.

True, very nice body of work, but I still say almost everything on his whole website can be mimiced or reproduced with Mandelbulb in a few hours

Looking at some of the pics on the internet, it looks like a great program. But it's not very self-explanatory and unfortunately, most searches for help files or tutorials lead to the now defunct site... Ah well. Time for some trial and error I'm afraid, but when to find the time??

most, but not all! try:

didn't have time to test them but the videos are available.
