something strangely prevalent on these forums is people "signing" their posts, even though their name is written in bold text just to the left.

is it not absolutely clear who's making the post, or what's going on here? tongue stuck out

You are right, of course: it IS clear who made the post. I am one of those people signing my post, but not always. For me it made things a bit more personal. I wasn't much of a forummember/visitor before. Maybe it was or is also a habit as emailwriter...but yes, there is no need for it.

There is something else though... I inscibed with my own name, so, on the left is my first name, but most people use their last name or a fantasy name. When they use their own first name in the text, it makes it more personal.

I would say that the majority of Members use some form of "alias" when joining up.  And even clicking their "profile" link on the left-hand side would not show whom they really are.  So at times they may wish to "sign" their posts just like an email.  (I do not wish to have to remember that "lycium" is really "Thomas Ludwig".)    wink

I personally have set it up to use the automatic "signing" option for all my posts, especially since my "handle" is my company name.
