Is it possible to set different "Frames per key" under the Animation Tab for each Keyframe?  The distance between each keyframe is different, so the number of frames to be rendered is also different.

afaik no! try to keep the distance constant. you can see the distance to the last keyframe in the view tab. or was it the animation tab? dunno and can't check at work. somewhere you find it.
