There's two stories about this image; please indulge me.

1) The colour in the image is artifact.  All surfaces are dead black, specular colours are grey scale only, fog is nearly black (dead black doesn't work, this is very slightly red, r10, g9, b7) and there is one light, bright white.  The red on the object is there without the fog and changes as the distance to the light increases.  I thought that was kinda cool, so I looked for an image to show it.

2) That cool fog depth and halo effect disappears as the raystep multiplier decreases.  At 0.01 to remove the obvious noise in the image, the fog is uniform and both depth and halo are gone. Very frustrating; thought I had it just right, went for the final render and the image I wanted was gone.

Consequently, the image here is shopped much more than it should be.
