When I started rendering my mandelbrot first deep zoom, I was told by Ultrafractal that it would take 12 hours.  However, as the hours have turned to days, and the days look poised to turn to weeks, I am noticing a disturbing trend:

While my "Time Elapsed" is increasing, as it should, so is my "Time Remaining".  I am now 175 hours in with some 83 remaining, and that number keeps getting bigger.  Like a nightmare, where the door at the end of the hall draws away from you faster the faster you run toward it, I am beginning to wonder if this thing will ever end.

Beware, those of you who yearn for that cool deep zoom video.  You may find yourself waiting...

...for Eternity!

My solution to that nightmare was to simply render the zoom from it's deepest point and zoom out!  Then reverse it in a video editor.

That way the first frames take longer to render than the last, and the percentage finished moves faster with time, not slower.

It takes just as long to render, but it's not nearly as frustrating   afro

Thanks Sock and Rev!  I wouldn't have known this until I started to do it.  So far I only am just starting to deep zoom, DEEPER than .......#.#e-060.  I purchased Fractal eXtreme because I love how deep it can go.  Unfortunately, I need to update the Graphics card AND my power supply, since I only have 350... power?

I'll look into it.  It's for my Windows 7 AMD II PC, Model HPE 360z.

That's a pretty good idea, Sockratease.  I will have to try that next time.  I started out with a rendering speed of over 20K pixels per sec, and now I'm at around 800.  I'm assuming this will be done by Halloween, but I'm not holding my breath.

Don't use UF for deep zoom unless you are veeeeeeeery patient.

This is off topic, but is a little curiosity that I have:
It is possible to find a real 3d mandelbrot set by deepzooming into the mandelbulb? in the same way that julia-like sets structures often appears on depth mandelbrot zooms?

Good question. It depends on what you call the mandelbulb, which traditionnally refers to the power 8 version.

As far as I can tell regarding the power 2 version, you can find minibulbs everywhere on the plane that cuts it in half to reveal the 2D Mandelbrot. This is obvious because there are minibrots everywhere on the boundary of the 2D one. But there are almost impossible to visualize if you don't cut the bulb in half, because they are in the middle of very chaotic areas, except maybe on the tip of antennas. Have a look at this images for example:

http://www.fractalforums.com/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=1150

http://www.fractalforums.com/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=1065

I think that outside this plane you cannot find any replica of the whole. The kind of minibulbs you can find outside of a symmetry plane are self similar to the main region you started to zoom in, but once you've started to zoom in one place, I think it's impossible to find the whole structure like you would in a 2D Mandelbrot. But it's not because I have not found one that there is none...

Well, while looking at my older images, perhaps this one is a counter-example:

LOL.  No kidding!  My time remaining has increased to almost 90 hours.  I think this may go on for weeks, and the worst part is, I'm still using the eval copy, so the resulting animation will be kinda useless except for reference purposes.  I wonder if I should just bail out...  sad

Beautiful collection of Minibrots are those ones!! Congratulations!! smiley
Those minibrots appears only when you cut the mandelbulb, but the outside structure remains like a neverending broccoli, as far as I have perceived (I mean, no other external extructure is visible, save the broccoli ones and the bridges that connect them), so, no 3d external Mandelbrot or julias.. at least none has been seen.. hmm..  I have to think more deeply about it.
BTW:I suppose that the minibrot presence means that the Mandelbulb is locally conected (in 3D), no?

What would you consider to be a good deep zoom app, all around?  I don't have an especially powerful computer, so the more efficient and speedy the rendering, the better.

Thanks,

I know Fractal eXtreme is one that can zoom deeper than any other app I've tried and it says it can be faster.  I though, am struggling with it.  But others have rendered DEEEEEEEEP zooms with it in less then 4 hours.  As for movies, it renders them as well.
