You are right; it is not that we need paired pictures to see stereographic 3D, it is the number of pseudo-repeating items in the horizontal plane that gives the illusion.
Therefore we can learn that all manner of repeating items can become 3D. I first noticed this many years ago when feeling particularly tired
whilst reading. My soft gaze on the page would make some of the similar repeating letters want to jump out. (try it)
I ignored this at the time as just an interesting phenomenon.
I noticed it again later on when I had an Amiga computer with a desktop screen made up entirely of a series of tiny layered squares -
- and on occasion when I soft focused into the screen (no going cross-eyed here), the blocks jumped out at me and I could
see a definite background depth 'hiding' beyond the icons (which stayed on the 'surface').
This caused me to experiment with basic repeating little pictures (mainly spheres or boxes) ever smaller and numerous
in layers across the screen, but I never was able to control which items jumped forward and which items receded into the
background (I just don't know why some do what they do but I'm sure it's something about width placement and distance
between one's eyes) so they just did their own thing.
Of course, we then had the trend for 'Magic Eye' 3D and, more recently, these wonderful 3D fractals (which are easier to animate as pairs of pictures)
- and make my basic experiments seem a bit primitive now - but if anyone knows the theory of correct placement to control the forwards/background
effect on items, it may spark in me a new interest in a variation on the theme.
