A Midi file contains all data of a music performance. Note on, note off, time, velocity, ect... In this video, I used it so when a key is on, a part of the fractal is shown. I only have to add a bit of retention, when a note become off, to soften the stroboscopic effect. Honestly, I quite satisfied with the result and surprised that this way to go is almost unseen so far.

great approach, love the idea.
doing this with a electronic-track would look very cool..
are you using your own mendelbrot-renderer for this?

Yes I use my own program that, from the beginning, focus on synchronization with music. I calculate and save points in the Mandelbrot, then I can quickly play film with different setting and let the artist decide. In the 7795 midiEvents of the concerto sweet music , note (key) range from 36 to 86, a downscale to 26 has been decided after long debates.

At first, in the point of view of music, I wanted to downscale to 24, a multiple of 12 that is an octave. A G3 and a G5 mean same Mandelbrot key. But using 26 instead of 24 brought more visual notes because it happens a lot that notes are played in two different octaves. Since a year, I have implemented SuperFractalThing fast calculation, thanks to this forum and its users for sharing very good stuff.

Well, I really enjoyed it. After this one I watched https://www.youtube.com/v/gYiKgRkvK98&rel=1&fs=1&hd=1 and I liked this one even more. Great music with a great video! A Beer Cup

that second video is indeed very cool! syncing zoom and colours with music makes such a difference!

Now I'd really like to try this program! happy

Chant of the night drums... demands way more works than using a midiFile of course. I've played it more than 100 times before the work was done. Because my program just starts a wav file at the beginning, when you work on the last part of the song and you want sound, it takes more and more time to progress. But hey! That's where the fun is.

In a previous post, I describe in details how it syncs to the music with the first video of this kind. In that video, at 1:47, the sequence with fastest zoom followed by the slower one really fit with the mood of the song.

that is indeed a nice method, sound syncing is always hard to grasp or different from what one wanted to achieve, using midi files directly is a very elegant method for creating nice vids

Good visualization ! I'm also looking into music reactive mandelbrot. I've discovered that having the zoom speed proportional to the intensity of the music' bass looks good.

I've tried another way to use a midi file. This time, each spotlight acts as a note played on the keyboard. Spotlight points toward a circle divided in 12 angles, representing an octave. And 4 circles of different size representing 4 octaves. The bigger the circle, the lower the note.
Difficult decisions were needed in order to reach goal. I mean, the thinner the spotlight is, the better we see the music but the lesser we see the fractal. And the other way around. Here is the compromise I have come to.

Fine matching the light effect with the piano music , music inspired from few games with JET SET WILLY.
The fractal landscape is cool.
