Hi. My name is Veronica and I'm an art major at Western Michigan University.
Lately I've been trying to get into projection, and projection mapping to render projections onto 3D objects.

I would love to create some 3D animations of fractals and I was wondering if it was possible to manipulate the speed and view of the camera around one so that it could go to music (i.e. zooming in and out to a tempo). Eventually I don't know if it's possible, but with the 3D rendering of a brick wall if each brick became it's own fractal and then eventually zoomed into one so that the whole wall was a fractal. If anyone has any suggestions where I start I'm all ears. I've never created my own fractal, but I do feel like it has a significant purpose in my art, and I'm dying to incorporate it.

hi there,

so, you need a starting position ...

- try ->ultrafractal5 and ultrafractalwiki.fractalforums.com as a general fractal creation starter
- create some lsystem trees http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L-system
- try then the flame fractals with ->apophysis or even better: ->apophysis 3d hack
- enter 3d world with *commercial* ->xenodream, or *shareware* ->incendia
- try some 3d projections using ultrafractal 5,  e.g. 3d ifs ( dunno the name ) by dave makin, or heightmap rendering
- then go back to ->ultrafractal5 and check out the http://www.hiddendimension.com/Tutorials/3DFractals/3DFractalRaytraceTutorial.html mandelbulb tutorial for rendering the mandelbulb
- after all the you should have enough knowledge to implement your own renderer
- and after all that you should have enough resources to get a reasonable rendering system wink

cheesy cheesy  afro

have fun, and do not hesitate to ask

Greetings, and Welcome to this particular Forum  !!!    smiley

I would love to create some 3D animations of fractals and I was

There are hundreds of applications available for creating fractal images:
    http://www.fractalforums.com/fractal-related-links/finding-fractal-related-software/

But as most people in this forum will attest to, it is a very time consuming process.  That is if you render each image as a frame of the animation and continue that process to get enough frames to make a lengthy video.

Another process is to use one of the more specialized fractal programs that are capable of producing 3-D objects (meshes), which can then be saved/exported for importing into a 3-D rendering application (i.e. Maya, Bryce, 3DSMax, etc.).  From there you could do fly-bys, rotations, various textures and backgrounds, and much more.
