This was one of my first attempts with this process, which, though simple,
seems counterintuitive...

1> Open image in GIMP
2> Pre-process (brightness, contrast, etc.)
3> Click Filters/GMIC/Artistic/Dream Smoothing

The result may be disappointing,
but next

4> Click Filters/Light & Shadow/Lighting Effects

Here, light, material properties, and bump map have simple adjustments.
(The "Environment" tab is unchecked)
Might take a few times to see what does what...

5>Click OK!  shocked grin

Chillheimer ...I've been talking elsewhere about these symmetry zones,
in terms of "gargoyle faces".
Someone noticed their appearance in mirror images of leaf foliage.
Benesi terms such regions "elephant valleys".

My hope is that others try my technique
because it's simple and gives startling results.

To show what can be done...here is a Van Gogh original followed by an enhanced version (though from different image)...
