This isn't as cool as the "Mandelbulb" 3D images that people have been posting lately, but I haven't tackled those yet.

It's a Mandelbrot set fractal rendered in 3D using distance estimate data to create a height map.

Rendered in FractalWorks, a free, high performance fractal renderer for Macintosh computers.

If you have the current version of FractalWorks you can recreate the image by copying the link below to the clipboard and selecting "New Fractal from URL in clipboard" in FractalWorks:

FractalWorks plot Gold & Brown Landscape

Very nice! Height of each point based on escape time, I assume? The lower the iteration count the higher the point? Also, I like the smooth texturing. Very nice.

Reese,

The height is based on distance estimate values rather than escape time. That's a value which is calculated by taking the running derivative of the function. It produces small values for points very close to the Mandelbrot set, and larger values for points further away. Distance estimate values are floating point values, and I prefer the shape I get with DE to the shape from escape times. Escape time plots tend to be much more "spiky", even if I use fractional iteration values.

Still catching up on past images I have not viewed before.  And this one is really quite unique!!!    smiley

Maybe another form of "crop circle" huh?    evil
