IFS "Popular and simple to comprehend" .... well, yes. Those small steps involved in almost all fractals are comprehensible. But the way they can interact! The kaleidoscopic IFS fractal in the 3D fractal software easily reminds of rocks, when a little rotation is added. Same goes for the mandelbox.

How long before we can recreate something like this?

That might make a nice compo section - reproduce the feeling of this photo using fractals.

Honestly creating these kind of images is standard fare in fractal landscape generation programs.
My favourite if mojo world:




Just search for mojo world galleries.
These are also real fractals, you have to find these places and they are infinitely detailed.
You can explore whole planets to find places like this!
