What if Z^N+C transformation applied to different shapes (not sphere)?
Here are some examples (degree 8 ):
cube 1x1x1, 1 iteration:

torus R1=0.75 R2=0.25, 8 iterations:

Though, the reflections, besides being very cool, are kinda confusing... could you do a version with diffuse shading? smiley
