Help with fractals

I started studying fractals recently... I would like to know if there is a way to build fractals of rivers networks, roads networks, plant roots or something similar (tree structures with ramifications).

Have you heard of An L-system or Lindenmayer system??  One place to start reading online is at this link:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L-system
There will be several references and other links there that may further assist with your studying of fractals.
