You might be interested in the 7X version of Apophysis:

One advantage of 7X over Apo 3D hack is graduated opacity for each transform whereas 3D hack allows only for an on/off "visibility" switch.  Mostly you would find similarities rather than differences between the two flame applications, but development the development of 7X appears to be ongoing and 3D hack was last updated in 2008.
There is some integration between 7X and Chaotica but I can't give you much info about that.
At the moment it may be wiser to use v15b of 7X as version 15c seems to still have some issues.
