I recently created several Julia set maps and published them here on HPDZ.NET.

These maps are huge tables with thumbnail images that are links to larger images of the Julia sets.

Would this have been better done with a single large image divided up into a bunch of links with the "usemap" attribute? Apparently browser support for usemap is sketchy, and I have read that HTML 5 will remove it entirely.

The advantage of utilizing usemap is that only one image would need to be downloaded when viewing one of the map pages, rather than hundreds of individual thumbnails as it is now. But if usemap is not well supported in browsers, it may be more of a problem than it's worth.

Any thoughts?
