This is something I had wanted to do before, but really want too with my current find, is there a way to set the rendering distance simular to the ambient depth?  So that the background shows through rather then the colours?  I had thuoght about taking screenshot, photoshopping it *or just different colours*  then pull the fog/render closer so stuff is hidden and use the old photo as the backdrop so you can setup layers.

Like one I saw where it looked like kelp forest, I thought about doing first one, adding fish, then rendering closer so that the fish show through, but the still rendered kelp would be infront giving the impression of fish being part of the image itself rather then stuck ontop of the image as they are.

well what I mean is I was looking to have the same effect of the fog as in draw distance only goes so far, but allow for the background to show, sounds like what you said might do it.  Was just thinking of a way to stack multiple pics of the same fractal ontop of each other with adjustments in each in order to get different colours at each depth and add animals or stuff to one layer and then he next overlaps some of the animals giving the impression of like a aquarium or other things.  I will try what you suggest.
