Hi Lycium and rbedford,

I tried X264, but could not get it to do anything. So I played with virtualdub. he results were spectacular. A 172 MB AVI compressed down to 6 MB with some loss of quality, but still quite viewable. Very interesting. Here is the result:

Thanks for the tip, guys.

404 on that link.

btw, in my post i suggested you download ffdshow, which is a codec pack that includes x264 support for avi files. in other words, you download and install ffdshow, then configure virtualdub to use x264 in the compression settings (be sure to tune the various options... this takes time, experimentation and reading but will make you a master of modern video compression).

Hi Lycium,

Yep, I checked and it has "disappeared" once again. I originally thought that it might have been related to capitalisation. But now I suspect that my ISP doesn't like large files. Sorry about that. 6 MB is still pretty large by some standards.

6mb is pretty big yeah; what res/fps/length is the animation?

for animations of moderate resolution (let's say up to 512x512), 1024kbit/s should be more than sufficient and produce a fairly small file, depending of course on the length and frame rate (not much sense in going over 25fps).

Hi Lycium,

The animation is 500 frames long at 400*300 pixels p[er frame * 24 bit colour. It is set to 15 fps (from memory). 6 MB is not too bad when the total of the source frames is over 44 MB.
