I hope that humanity in the 21st century will finally realize how important it is to study fractals in order to enhance universal knowledge...
I also would have loved to see Mr Mandelbrot in a conference...

Sad news.
Mr. Mandelbrot's research inspired my love towards fractals. He did things that no one else had done before, and he endowed us with the knowledge, that beauty is infinite and infinity is beautiful.

Very sad news and a big loss. The end of an era in a way.

To paraphrase William Wallace, "Every man dies. Not every man iterates towards infinity." I think once you've made your mark on the world, you effect the way things unfold from then on. He may not be doing any new work, or saying any new words, but to call him "gone" wouldn't exactly be true. The Rev

So sorry to hear this -- a wonderful modest and funny man -- the man who almost singlehandedly connected math and intuition --thank you for the views, the vistas, the forms nobody ever saw before, thank you and have a good trip -- assuming you will get lost in fractals as I hope, where I will be going someday. Really sad news. Not many people can be credited for a new paradigm in science. He was one of them.

Everything seems to be gearing up. Tracking, obituary, even the bad taste humour...
Laughing in the face of bad times is a time honored way of coping. If I may (and nobody be offended at this) I'd like to share two of the bad taste humour comments that actually made me laugh! On one board somebody posted this: Police found his body in the living room, but when they tried to trace a chalk outline, they found they had to make tighter and tighter turns at the edges until the outline became transcendental and stuff. And on another was a simple: Oh, frak. If anyone has any others that were truly funny, and not disrespectful, I say it's OK to share them. (If Trifox disagrees, he can delete this post!) (I'd understand) We can mourn his passing, but let's not forget to celebrate his Life at the same time!

LOL. I'm sure he would have laughed had he been around to hear it.

He has left, over the years, an infinity of small copies of himself around him, dense and strongly connected, wherever you look. I somehow feel like one of them.
