It means that the length of the gradient is almost the same as the difference in iteration count between those "almost-circles"/julia sets with high symmetry. Indeed it creates some nice effects. I do it all the time.

You won't see it (so clear) without AA, but it is NOT because of it. If you could view it in a non-anti-aliased image of about 9600x7200, you would see about the same. Given enough viewing-distance (or small enough image) your eyes/brain will implement about the same algorithm as the computer antialiasing.  nerd

I was thinking more of aliasing in the signal-processing sense -- what DinkyDau said, but it was late and I couldn't manage to unpack the reference into plain language.  wink
