I made experiment with mixing Mandelbulb and Mandelbox formula. I used cubic folding algorithm from Mandelbox before mandelbulb formula.
double scale = par.power;

Pseudocode:
if (x > 1.0) x = 2.0 - x;
else if (x < -1.0) x = -2.0 - x;
if (y > 1.0) y = 2.0 - y;
else if (y < -1.0) y = -2.0 - y;
if (z > 1.0) z = 2.0 - z;
else if (z < -1.0) z = -2.0 - z;
new = MandelbulbFormula(x,y,z)
x = new.x + cx;
y = new.y + cy;
z = new.z + cz;

result:

Is that pwr=2? What does pwr=8 look like? (Or vice versa?)

Yes, it is pwr=2. I will try with other powers and formulas.

Below there is some close-up. It is much more irregular than normal Mandelbox.

this looks amazing cheesy

It mixes the architecture-like structures of the box with the organic brocoli-ish shape of the bulb and the result is an organic-mechanic structure cheesy

You asked about power 8. Please look at image below

hmm, if played with it a bit, this might possibly be brought in the shape of really working fractal gears cheesy

I have changed a little folding conditions. Now are:
if (x > 2.0) x = 4.0 - x;
else if (x < -2.0) x = -4.0 - x;
....
etc...

It looks completely different. Now there are visible 27 separate bulbs and lots of small bulbs around each bulb.

I have just released new version of Mandelbulber with these formulas
