to me, this "fine line" style is more appealing than the usual gradient type of coloring

I like it a lot too, and I would be very happy if you would provide the location parameters?
I don't understand how there can be different colors inside the shape than outside?
I have resumed playing with DE in different colors, but the way I achieve different colors is very different from your image, as the attachment shows

thanks  smiley

here it's just DE to isolate the boundary, with escape time (and a multiwave) selecting the hue, and the saturation and luminance set to constant values.  i really should at least be generating a gradient for the saturation and/or luminance based on the distance, or something a little more interesting like that, i just havent gotten around to doing much with the distance yet.  i endeavor to experiment more with it soon.

it sounds like you have developed a system for separating things into layers, which sounds and looks interesting also.

Ok so you are combining DE and escape time coloring. That is cool!
If you would use DE to pick the color, most of the shapes in your location would have the same color, only the larger spirals would perhaps have another color, so I don't think that would necessarily be any revolutionary.
I think you should at least keep your way of coloring be possible in your program because I think it is unique and all your images you have posted are lovely indeed.

The layers in my images comes naturally from close passing minibrots and using DE to pick the colors. So it's not so special smiley

I did a test animation to the location with that kind of color combination of distance estimation and escape time smiley
