I want to get really close to the surface in fractals but the navigator just generates new iterations. How can I get close to the terrain?

If the zoom level at the bottom of the Navigator window is increasing then you are zooming in.
However, you may have a fractal where the repeats itself within itself so zooming will not help if you are after a variance - try adding another formula to the mix to disrupt the repeating.

IF you expand the navigator panel (its the down arrow to the right of  the word "Lightness")...you can select "Fixed zoom and steps". then when you walk and 'collide'..the parts of theobject  'nearest' to you will change to bright red...that means you have arrived at the surface and are cutting into it...you can carry on but you'll go through the object, rather than infinitly towards it. If you want see greater detail after you've collided, walk backwards till the red disappears and manually increase the zoom (there will be an arrow next to zoom when you select fixed zoom and steps mode.)
