Herman City Redux

http://www.fractalforums.com/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=15745

Experimenting with Herman City produced this, from using a coloring formula variant that causes curved artifacts. In this case it gave the city highways!

Triskelion Julia set with a cyclic attractor and a Herman ring -- same parameters in fact. In some ways less mathematically faithful to the underlying dynamics, due to the highways.

It's a glowing curved mesh (I love FEA as much as fractals) with fractal stuff in it. Wonderful!

Thanks! (What's FEA?)

If you liked this, a forthcoming image (in about a week) should knock your socks off.

FEM = Finite Element Method
FEA = Finite Element Analysis
CFD = Computational Fluid Dynamics (a subgroup of FEA)

The global proces to carry out a simulation is to get your hands on a CAD model (or create one yourself). Let specialized software chop it up in little connected pieces (meshing). Then define some boundary conditions like where the structure is attached to the world, external forces, heat, in- and outflow,etc. The solver will then iteratively do some calculation on each node in the grid, until the differences between nearby nodes are small enough (convergence). After all set and done, you can get pretty pictures like these ones:

Ah. Thanks for the explanation.
