NO there is no any mix , is a pure mandelbulb3d ! on my Deviant Art gallery i even posted the parameters.

It is even a raw fractal but , yes there is a trick  :
done a first render i saved as background,
then i did a second render using same lights and loading the first as background image
and then i did again to add the dark flying object
