A picture made with Bibs suggestion

http://www.fractalforums.com/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=10377

Bib, is this what you meant by a more delineated edge with less of a transition from colour to colour?  Black edges do make the point of focus more definite. If it is then I thank you for your most generous suggestion.  Thomz

p.s.  It appears the picture was lost in the digital cyberspace...so I'll try it again

Mmmh this is not really what I meant, although the result is interesting. I was just suggesting that the intermediate colors when doing a green to pink gradient are not necessarily beautiful, so you can insert some black in the middle, see a quick and dirty example in attachment. But it's really a matter of personal taste!

There's a more general principle here, which is that luminance contrast works best to bring out details or delineate boundaries.

this kind of palette (to be used as map or gradient) usually boost the chromatic contrast and so help to reveal detail and is usually pleasant for the eyes (i.e. there is a lot of chromatic contrast also between green and pink but usually is less appealing )

i don't mind publicize the app , it is the concept that may be useful and it is not strictly needed apply it with mathematical precision to have interesting results
