I don't really like how the article is written.
Rather like tales of a hero than an objective article, especially if you look at the comments under the pics...

me also dislikes the quality of the article, it is just mentioned to use spherical coordinates, but why is not really clear ( because of easy exponentiation with polar versions, and simple adaption ... )

Der Spiegel is not a scientific publication. They are a news magazine with a reputation for good investigation into politics. But their science pieces are not really supposed to be in depth.

The German variant of Scientific American had a mandelbulb image, too. Just the image and a paragraph of plain text, without any thorough descriptions.

I guess the only way for fractals to make it to the headlines is when someone finds a way to turn them into weapons of mass destruction ...

"Muhahahaha"

Well, nothing easier than that. Just use fractal antennae to launch some kind of mass destruction rocket or stuff...

couldnt it be used as defense, e.g. deferring bullets in the body ( better armor ),
or for clearing minefields or perhaps rocket shooting  afro

Someday, man will understand primary theory; how every aspect of our universe has come about. Then we will describe all of physics, build a complete understanding of genetic engineering, catalog all planets, and find intelligent life. And then we'll just puzzle over fractals for eternity.
