This is my latest animation. I've improved the transparency and refraction as well as a smoothing algorithm for creating the volume itself. It's sorta like anti-aliasing, but is done as the iteration points are added to the volume, it's really more of a "Gaussian splatter" function.

This format is supposed to be mpeg4 yet seems to play in Windows Media Player, please let me know if you have trouble.

Sweet.  I like the splatter effect.  Makes the IFS look like drops of mercury.

The movie you posted uses Microsoft's old MP42 codec, which isn't really MPEG-4 but should work for most Windows users.  More info here: http://www.moviecodec.com/topics/5098p1.html

I grabbed the GIF version from DeviantART and encoded MPEG-1 and XviD movies which might play better for some folks.  Okay by you if I post them?

that's not really a good solution since the gif will already be dithered to 256 colours; aside from the fact that noise (as produced by dithering algorithms) doesn't compress well the original fidelity of the animation has already been lost in the aforementioned quantisation step. one might as well visit da and just see the original gif.

i'd recommend grabbing an xvid codec build (koepi's is old but works well: http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml) and resizing the video via virtualdub (there is ample resolution but not enough antialiasing) before compressing with it. there aren't many frames in the animation it should be compiled with a lower framerate so the invidual frames can be appreciated too.

Sure, please do

I'm using Mencoder to make the videos (it's free). Obviously I'm still learning, and Mencoder is hard to use and poorly documented.

If someone has a suggestion for a "real" video suite I'd appreciate any suggestions. I've tried out several now including Blaze Media Pro and WebEx both of which didn't work as well as Mencoder and weren't freeware anyway.

Thanks Don.  Here are two alternate versions:

480x384 MPEG-1 (.mpg):
* http://ericbigas.com/doncasteel/GaussianSplatter.480x384.mpg
* 5MB download
* Plays on any computer.  No additional software or codecs needed.

900x720 XviD (.avi):
* http://ericbigas.com/doncasteel/GaussianSplatter.XviD.720p.avi
* 17MB download
* Requires XviD or DivX.  The free VLC player at http://www.videolan.org will play it.

Agreed, Lyc, that video-from-GIF is well short of optimal and usually not worth doing.  But the GIF is 17MB and only a few seconds long, so it won't play smoothly in-browser for some viewers.  I couldn't see the animation at the full 25fps until I converted the GIF to video.  My MPEG and XviD versions look decent, but an XviD from the original frames would be much better.

i've suggested the free+good+standard approach just above! undecided

here's an executive summary if it was tl;dr -

1. get virtualdub & xvid codec
2. encode
3. ...
4. profit!

it's even a zillion times easier than using mencoder, which i too have used (and found horrible compared to just opening the first of a sequence of frames in vdub, selecting the xvid codec and saving the avi).

if don doesn't re-encode the original data and you're forced to work with the gif, a way to regain that lost precision while simultaneously getting a bit of antialiasing is to convert the gif to a truecolour avi, then resizing (with high quality) and encoding with virtualdub. even with only 256 colours in the source signal you'll get some precision back from the resize, and having a smoother signal to work with will improve the quality/filesize ratio significantly. those 17mb should be < 1mb for an anim of that length!

Here it is in XviD using VirtualDub as suggested:

https://fractrace.dev.java.net/files/documents/6137/51090/job1170592040160-003_XviD.mpg

I applied some filtering to anti-alias it a bit, but didn't resize it.

VirtualDub is great (thanks lycium) the only problems I have with it are:

First, nowhere does it provide a way to load individual frames (actually it does, you just have to play the guessing game as to how)

Second selecting an output format is the same way, it's not clear where to select a codec, and the only menu option for output is "Save as AVI", in the dialog you only get the choice between AVI and "All Files". So I selected the XviD codec and named the file with .mpg. But I have no way of knowing that's what I actually ended up with.

there is a very obviously named option for video compression selection, ditto for audio. if you look around you'll also find the framerate setting, for this animation i think 15fps ought to be ideal.

with my apps i've always saved a series with filenames frameXXXXX.bmp, the first of which i open in vdub and it scans the rest. adobe's imageready (which is used by many for making animated gifs) follows the same convention, and i've been using it for years before both apps so the convention must come from somewhere...

as for saving with mpg extension,  huh? huh? huh? huh? huh? huh? huh?

I'm sorry I didn't elaborate, but yes selecting a single image file in a numbered series does import the entire series. My comment was only that there is no obvious way, nor any instructions in the documentation or on the website. I had tried drag and dropping all of the files, but only some of them made it in.

As for outputing in mpeg format, I "think" it worked, it plays well in MS MediaPlayer (which is all I was after), but I think it would still work if it was an AVI with the mpeg extension.

My comments weren't ment to be as nevative as they ended up sounding. After spending very little time with it It is now my app of choice for creating videos.
