Hey, I wanted to let you know that I've just released a project I've been working on for some time. It's pre-rendered fractals for VR headsets such as Oculus rift. Basically it's just a high rez film that plays all around you. So for those of you with a headset (or gear VR or cardboard etc):
here it is:

https://wearvr.com/#game_id=game_647;

teaser trailer:
<a href="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=116545122&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;fullscreen=1&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=01AAEA" target="_blank">http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=116545122&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;fullscreen=1&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=01AAEA</a>

 shocked
That alone was worth the long wait for the oculus! Definitely in my top5 five-oculus jawdroppers-list, and a nice thing to show first-timers.. smiley
Congratulation on that awesome job!

Looking forward to moremoremore!!!

I especially liked the moments when you fly very close over a cliff with a huge drop afterwards - that sense of space and feeling of flight - intense!!
If you (what I really hope) are doing more of these videos, I'd love to see more focus on that! next one a faster ride? embarrass
also the moving lights/shadows are very cool!!
maybe 2 or three well placed static light(ball)sources, like huge torches lighting some caverns..

oh my.. gotta watch it again right now!

edit: how long did you render this on how many machines?! and what is the total resolution?

Thanks!

the rendertime was a little under two weeks on about 8 machines.....
Had to render 5000 4K (actually 8K with antialiasing) images from Mandelbulb3d.

I stretched the 5000 frames to the ten minute trip it is now.
So the video's specs are: 4000x2000 30fps

unfortunately a large mp4 file, but I hope not too large for people to download it and try it on their headsets!

actually i started rendering one with a point light source...

I downloaded the file from mega. Media player classic reports that there is no sound in the file. I can only see the video.

There is, indeed no audio.

I have struggled with music/audio a lot, as I realize it's so much better with music, but because so many different music works with it, I decided to let everybody choose their own soundtrack to zone out.

In the future, I will release more that contain special music written for the trip.

did you watch it on a VR headset?

No, I didn't watch it with a VR headset, but I now know what kind of headset it is you're talking about. I expected a video with surround sound. Unfortunately I don't have such VR headset.

Hello brasnacte,

i like your fractal video very much! Watching it with my Dk2 is incredible!! Something i use now
when demo the Rift to friends smiley
I also downloaded Mandebulb3D and started doing my own creations.
Tried stereoscopic 360° but it dont work correct. Rendered Left eye 4000x1000 and the
right eye 4000x1000. Then combined both to one Over/Under 3D pic (4000x2000).
Watching it with LifeViewRift in 360° Stereo work only for just 180° if you look behind you
the stereo change to what should be far awy is now close and vice versa.
I dont know if it is possible at all to do a 360° in just one file.
Nevertheless, i fall in love with Mandelbulb3D and will do alot of 360° videos for the Rift,
even its not 3D, it feels 3D, the Fractals looks so huge with the Rift, incredible!

Best regards
Nedo

Hey Nedo,

indeed it won't work if you render a left and right in 360 degrees, as the locations of your eyes change in respect to which way you turn your head.
We did find a way around this, but this only works in regular render software (vray etc) not in Mandelbulb.
So I'm afraid we won't have 3d 360 fractals for a while... That being said, I don't mind if it's not stereoscopic: I rather like the fact that they seem so huge and far away, if it gets stereo it also looks smaller......
