This post http://www.fractalforums.com/fractals-in-nature/fractal-crystal/msg37082/#msg37082 made me wonder about a transparency feature in M3D! I know the wishlist is very long though.... undecided  grin

And also this feature would be immensely appreciated for some users; http://www.fractalforums.com/general-discussion/convert-a-distance-estimate-to-a-mesh/msg36996/#msg36996

I don't use 3d software but many people would appreciate a lot I guess. grin

Two top of the list wishes you've got there bib & DarkBeam!  A Beer Cup A Beer Cup
I would put meshes over transparency though....  afro

Transparency is one thing, then next would come index of refraction.
You are asking Mandelbulb to be a ray tracer...and the results reflect what happened to the ray tracing world 30 years ago...(like millions of reflective spheres)
Next will be the ability to assign materials like glass, chrome, water, etc
Its actually kind of funny to see

But both the Bulb programs are amazing in their own right

Transparency, IOR, and subsurface-scattering would all be great, but is it even possible? This requires tracing rays inside the fractals.

The distance estimates normally used are for outside distance estimation. Interior distance estimates seems much more complicated, and requires periodicity detection - at least for the complex Mandelbrot, and I haven't seen any formulas for the Mandelbulbs or other 3D fractals.

Brute force ray marching or mesh conversion would still be possible, but a DE-based method would be great - if possible.

Just give us a simple to use mesh export for .obj files and all the materials, indices of refraction, and even etc. can be handled in Carrara  (or your 3D Program Of Choice!).   afro

If actual 3D export was to be considered I would think the most sane output would be ZBrush like, as it makes very complex surfaces as a routine. From there the export to polygons could be made at the level needed in any number of formats

Back to the subject: Transparency would be great! It's on my wishlist too... As well as the intensity control of lightmaps (OK, that's a little of topic again  grin). And yes, internal refraction would be even nicer... Again, no pressure, Jesse  wink

hiya, yes transparent looks very good, i dont know if it is possible with the infinite internal layers in most fracals... explain technically how it could work?

and i would LOVE mesh... cos i am making a game and i want to fill it with mandelbulb shapes. how do you think that would work also, a mesh exists from 2 -3 -10 perspectives whereas a mandelbulb 3d image only exists from one perspective? i want mesh i would pay!
