Are they dead?

During the struggle to climb up from the cavern they suddenly fell into during their exploration tour, their headlights shined upon thousands and thousand of...?  What are they?  Are they alien mummies or are they not dead at all but in a  hatching stage.  Nobody knew, but they knew one thing for sure.... they had to get the hell out of there as silent as possible!
