Jeroen, this is truly renderable in Kalles Fraktaler ;-)

I'm sure of that, even older software like Gnofract4D can render similair stuff:

Gnofract4D has been my fractal software of choice for some time. But since I'm used to the (zoomlevel)freedom of Kalles Fraktaler, I noticed that I hit the frustrating zoom limit pretty often. Image above required some stepping back and re-zooming in, because the image went all blurry. This is about as deep you can go in GF4D. Besides, using the standard color-bands in GF4D gives ugly (unwanted) stripes instead of the smoothness of quaz0r. I had to trick GF4D by splitting the gradients and adjusting the brightness a little. This still did not work very well, as you can still see the light stripes of color.

Also I did not spend much time adjusting the color wave frequency to the inherent frequency of the spiral shapes. I think quaz0r put some effort in this, to create the beautiful black inner-shapes (bubble-like structures), while keeping the blueish-green glow around them.

Sometimes it's not about huge render times or an overload of complexity. Simple shapes with old-school color palette can work very well, if executed the right way. Eye for detail and a little craftmanship goes a long way.

thanks for the nice comment smiley  i didnt know image posts made it to so many different sections of the forum simultaneously, i just randomly stumbled into this section just now and saw my name in the list of posters and thought hmm, i never posted here before...  yeah ive been messing around with writing a mandelbrot program the last few weeks, not that the world necessarily needs another fractal program but more as just a fun personal project to try to learn more about fractals and how they are rendered.  also being a linux user i get tired of all the fractal geniuses releasing their software only for windows, even though some of them do run in wine like kalles.   i actually put next to zero effort into "making" this image look that way, the effort in that department was done by pauldelbrot in coming up with his multiwave coloring method and taking the time to describe it in some detail here on the forum.  this is just my initial interpretation of what he described, with some random values entered in.

i have gnofract4d installed too though i havent messed around with it a whole lot, it seemed kinda old.  not a bad render out of it there smiley

Jeroen, you had a non-saturated linear interpolation. Why many fractal programms don't have a bezier interpolation?
