Oh, you predated me by a year.
Btw, since you mentioned that: A simple L-system couldn't context-sensitively bend away from existing paths, etc.
L-systems mostly are thought of as systems to mimick natural shapes. Usually, the actual encoding in lifeforms is done differently. They just happen to result in the same outcomes.

One of the biggest "problems" with L-systems is when they overlap and generate the same pattern some natural thing grows in, however, the natural thing clearly can not overlap in the same way, thus complicating the rules that stand behind it.
