Hi this is my first post on here. I've been using this image on some of my music accounts such as Youtube and Soundcloud and i am interested in making my own high resolution version to use in videos / album covers.

I have no idea where i found the original and i have edited it a bit in Photoshop. I know the Mandelbrot set is one of the most common to create but i really like the simplicity of this one and the spikes coming off it.

Any help would be much appreciated thanks!

Ever use Processing?  It's a free, open-source programming language designed specifically for artists with little to no coding experience.  You can get it at http://processing.org.

Included in the IDE is plenty of example code, including one that renders a black-and-white Mandelbrot set.  Though the image rendered is small, a few tweaks to the parameters and you can make it as big and hi-res as your hardware can handle.  The example is in File > Examples > Topics > Fractals and L-systems > Mandelbrot.

If you do know something about coding and want to re-create it in another environment, this example code should give you a good idea how to program a fractal.

I would agree with AtomicZagnut, Processing is how I learned to program the Mandelbrot set and all other fractals I can make after. Daniel Shiffman's examples on Mandelbrot are quite good: http://processing.org/learning/topics/mandelbrot.html

The image in the link is not as nice as the one you posted, but after you understand why it works smoothing it is not a big hurdle.

Ok thanks a lot you two i will give Processing a try. Loving the fact that it's open source too!

Most of the ones i have seen have the smooth curves like in your link. I will have to work out how to get spikes, i'll post my results if i have any luck.
