In fact, to get this effect in Mandelbulb 3D, one just needs to turn off all light sources and just use ambient lighting and ambient shadows.

And to get the fine details, I rendered the image with a 3x3 antialiasing.

Great details.  I like the subtle coloring too.  The lighting reminds me of films I've seen of those tiny submarines exploring old, sunken shipwrecks or one of the sunken temples from several HP Lovecraft short stories like The Temple.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Temple_%281920_short_story%29
