The Mutara Vortex
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: A Julia set of the discrete Volterra-Lotka system. With the chosen parameters, there is a stable cycle of period 25 as well as a stable fixed point at infinity. The purple and green points go to the latter, with brighter and greener points doing so more slowly. The other colors go to the 25-cycle, with the color encoding some information about the dynamics. One component is the closest distance-squared of any later orbit point to the initial orbit point, with very close approaches producing a big luminance boost for a point, which makes the attractor itself light up like stars in a nebula in space.
