The HOLY GRAIL of 3D FRACTALS
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: No need to search anymore guys, It is now here, for real, in my trembling hand! ![]() Lathed and sculptured by the mathematical GODS Impossible for us to see or hold before the key to their cosmos was handed over to us by the collaboration of Daniel White, Paul Nylander, Thomas Löwe, Jesse, Luca and many many others at fractalforums.com. For you who don't know about the quest for this particular Holy Grail, check out the original thread here at fractalforums: http://www.fractalforums.com/3d-fractal-generation/true-3d-mandlebrot-type-fractal/ It is possible to drink from it, but the material is "not foodsafe" according to Shapeways. A funny fractal detail is that the "bowl" contains a copy of the whole Grail, and that copy contains a copy… This version is very expensive because there are lots of invisible details inside the "globes", if there are interest I could do a cheaper version where I have booled it out = less material to print. Mandelbulb 3D > Fiji > Meshlab > Netfabb > Shapeways More images / take it for a spin / buy a very expensive plastic Grail at shapeways: http://www.shapeways.com/model/896354/ Stats: Total Favorities: 0 View Who Favorited Filesize: 482.92kB Height: 1280 Width: 1830 Discussion Topic: View Topic Keywords: printed holy grail Posted by: KRAFTWERK ![]() Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Image Linking Codes

KRAFTWERK | June 26, 2013, 09:40:08 AM Thank you Tim! ![]() |
Tim Emit | June 24, 2013, 08:41:40 PM pure class Johan |
KRAFTWERK | May 13, 2013, 01:42:28 PM It has to be .OBJ or .STL (or some of the other filetypes they mention on the site (shapeways.com) Voxels is not possible (don't ask me why). The procedure is rather long Mandelbulb 3D > Fiji for combining > Meshlab for cleaning and reducing faces > Netfabb for checking / mending holes and other faults. |
John Smith | May 13, 2013, 01:27:59 PM What file type would you use to create the model? do you send them the voxel stack, or do you have to compile it into a single file and send it? |
KRAFTWERK | May 04, 2013, 03:59:28 PM Thank you Alef, the apollonian pattern is sometimes found in multiiterated mandelbox/kifs hybrids like this one. And thank you Dan... to be honest you need to do pretty big 3D prints to get good detail, and big prints are expensive... ![]() |
Tahyon | May 04, 2013, 10:10:50 AM Incredible details on that 3D print, i have to print some of my pendants at that company ! ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Alef | May 03, 2013, 03:32:54 PM Great work. Still life of almoust academic exercises, and a fractal inside. Looks like apollonian gasket throught. |
KRAFTWERK | May 03, 2013, 08:15:09 AM Thank you for your input Dinky! Actually my whole idea was that the 3D printed fractal Grail doesn't belong in this seventeenth century still and I wanted it to stand out from it. A golden / silver Grail would be boring and predictable, the Holy Grail of 3D Fractals is white and alienated from the environment it has been sucked out to from the beautiful cosmos of mathematics. |
Dinkydau | May 02, 2013, 11:29:41 PM I think this could have been much better if the printed fractal was not just plain white. It looks like it doesn't belong here. I do really like everything else, the formulas, the romanesco, the atmosphere, and indeed the subtle mandelbrot logos which indeed I didn't see at first. |
KRAFTWERK | May 02, 2013, 06:57:34 PM And only two words from Weavers... must mean something... Is this THE END? ![]() |
weavers | May 02, 2013, 06:10:29 PM Thank you! |
KRAFTWERK | May 02, 2013, 05:11:45 PM Thank you Truman, I thought no one would notice them ![]() |
trumanbrown | May 02, 2013, 04:59:48 PM Beautiful composition! Love the subtle mandelbrot logos. |
KRAFTWERK | May 02, 2013, 04:15:06 PM It is the VL in MC! ![]() |
KRAFTWERK | May 02, 2013, 04:14:29 PM Thank you Louis, it took some time to arrange to get the ambience I wanted. And the grapes was very tasty! (and the romanesco too, we had it for dinner the day after) ![]() |
bib | May 02, 2013, 04:13:39 PM I love the subtle VL, excellent render ![]() ![]() ![]() |
LMarkoya | May 02, 2013, 04:04:25 PM Beautiful 3D render and great scene setup |
KRAFTWERK | May 02, 2013, 03:01:07 PM Cheers Christian! ![]() |
cKleinhuis | May 02, 2013, 02:52:12 PM haha, nice! |
