Well, I can't claim I completely understand how it works, but the fact remains that some trap mergings yield pretty cool 3D effects. I have managed to get at least one image--very different from this one, except for the Ikenaga Julia formula--with the same "3Dness".

I am making several trials at the moment in order to determine which mergings--and under which conditions--elicit the effect, and if all else fails, I'll ask the programmers themselves.

For this particular image, I used the Orbit Traps Gradient coloring algorithm, with trap merge as the class and two traps in the first and second trap blocks: Super Shape (ring a bell?) for the first, and JLB's RRL for the second. The merge mode is "maximum", the trap mode is "Last", and the trap color mode is "Distance for the shape layer (grayscale) and "Angle to Origin" for the color layer (with an fBm texture). I blended the second layer with "color".

For more information on trap merge and the use of classes in UF5, Ron Barnett put together an excellent tool, the challenges, and an excellent resource, the tutorials, both in his website. The direct link to both is:

I hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for the comment!

damn it, how cool is that ?!?!?! the 3d effekt comes from the trap merging ?!?!?
