Mandelbulb3D or Mandelbulber?
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: There are many good reasons for not doing fractals, and a good one is that your PC does not work anymore. My hard disk crashed, it was impossible to boot Windows. I managed to backup my data using a bootable Ubuntu CD, and now I think I am fed up with Windows, I have installed Ubuntu (and it works on the same disk that Windows refused to boot!). So I'm discovering this fantastoc OS! I have of course installed Mandelbulber, but since I'm so used to M3D, I've tried Wine, so now I hesitate! smiley

There are any number of reason for crashes. One is to simply listen to how much more noise your HDD is making now than when it was new. Crash avoidance is a simple as:
1. Run ccleaner each morning
2. Defrag HDD each week
3. HDD's over 3 years old become suspect, and hence get replaced on my 4 computers.
4. Use a reliable backup HDD program such as O&O diskimage, which has an option
to make a bootable backup HDD. I always have 2 backup Hdd's on hand.

I even went  so far as taking my iMac apart, using a dremel tool to cut out the back plastic for easy removal of the HDD, instead of having Apple replace the HDD for $350.00 . I use bootcamp, with win7 sp1 and OSX Snow Leopard. On the PC side there is nothing wrong with Win 7 sp1, its never crashed? Also afriend of mine constantly complains of not having the correct drivers for printing using Ubuntu.

Linux might be a useful solution for several particular cases, but for me as a user only, it is surely not.
have you ever tried to get a tv stick or other special hardware operational? a real pain in the ass.
win seven is quite nice, stable and there's no need for hours long configuration orgy. and the system builder edition is not that expensive too.

Agreed about Vista. Very painful! I use Seven on my professional laptop and it's much more stable. If the upgrade from Vista to Seven was free, I would install Seven at home. As I work in the software industry, I don't want to use a cracked Seven, so I really might stick with Ubuntu. Time will tell. I had bought in emergency an external 1 TB drive to back up my data, and Ihave ordered a 2 TB new internal disk to replace the one with bad sector, but since Ubuntu works fine on it anyway...Now I have will have almost 4 TB of storage, and I don't watch movies smiley

Thought "Ubuntu" was a Tribe in Africa....Just kiddin, I know it's open source Linux. don't know much about it though. I hear you about Windows though, I dumped Vista after a Year and a half in favor of going back to XP-Pro/SP3, don't even want to think about Se7en. Microsoft will stop supporting XP some time next year, when they do I probably won't be far behind you, either going with Ubuntu or forking out the Bucks for OSX.
