This is a pretty simple Mandelbrot set, rendered in FractalWorks 3D using tweaked distance estimate (DE) data for the height value.

After calculating the height value of each pixel, I apply a sine wave to the fractional iteration value and add it to the height value. FractalWorks lets you adjust the period and amplitude of the sine wave that's applied, and attenuate it for high iteration values so it doesn't look like total noise in the "crinkly bits."

I think it looks like a river canyon, with sand dunes on the shore. I added the clouds in Photoshop to complete the effect.

Nice.  I would have used an actual photo of clouds over the cloud rendering filter in photoshop, but that's my only input other than to say it looks cool.  I'd love to see a fly-through.

This feature, more than any other in FractalWorks, is *Screaming* for you to train the software to do Animations!!

Export of image sequences is more than enough - it doesn't have to compile movie files   afro
